SCENOGRAPHY

Retrospective – altered daily (2011)

Gavin Krastin often collaborates as scenographer for his long-time partner, choreographer and performer Alan Parker. An 11 day series of performance interventions, Retrospective – altered daily probes the potential meaninglessness of dance. The dance language is an extension of ideas presented by Yvonne Rainer in her seminal antimetaphorical work, Trio A: no intended meaning through phrasing, virtuosity or rhythm. Each day the extraneous visual theatricalities and scenographic elements from well-known existing dance works are added to the core dance language as a means to investigate the relationship between kinetic and visual languages in the mean-making process.

Retrospective – altered daily was performed at the Dance Umbrella 2011 (Johannesburg, South Africa).
